Valve surgery: heart valve repair and replacement
The heart has four valves that keep blood flowing in one direction. When one narrows or leaks, valve surgery can repair it or replace it with a prosthesis.

Repair preserves the patient's own valve and often relies on rings and other supporting devices. Replacement uses mechanical or biological prostheses.
