TAVI: transcatheter aortic valve implantation
TAVI is a minimally invasive way to replace the aortic valve without opening the chest. A folded prosthesis is delivered by catheter, usually through an artery in the groin, and expanded inside the diseased valve.
What it is
Severe aortic stenosis is a narrowing of the valve leaving the heart. It forces the heart to work harder and can cause breathlessness, dizziness or chest pain.
TAVI is an alternative to conventional surgical valve replacement. Each hospital's heart team decides between the two, patient by patient.
When it is used
- Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis.
- Patients for whom the medical team considers a less invasive route appropriate.
- Procedures that need a hybrid or cath-lab setting and a multidisciplinary team.
