Aortic surgery: aneurysms, dissections and coarctation
The aorta is the body's main artery. Its best-known diseases are aneurysm, dissection and coarctation, and they call for prompt, specialised assessment.
What it is
An aneurysm is a bulge in the aortic wall. In a dissection the layers of the wall separate. Coarctation is a localised narrowing.
Treatment can be surgical, replacing the affected segment with a graft, or endovascular, placing stent grafts by catheter.
When it is used
- Thoracic or abdominal aortic aneurysms.
- Acute or chronic aortic dissection.
- Coarctation of the aorta and other malformations.
