Coronary surgery: treating the coronary arteries

The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. When they become blocked they can cause angina or a heart attack. They are treated by opening the artery with a stent or by creating a new route with a bypass.

What it is

A stent is placed by catheter and keeps the artery open. A bypass is an operation that joins one of the patient's own blood vessels to the coronary artery beyond the blockage.

The choice between the two depends on how extensive the disease is and on the patient's general condition, and it is made by the medical team.

When it is used

  • Coronary disease with angina or risk of heart attack.
  • Blockages in one or several coronary vessels.
  • Revascularisation procedures in the cath lab and in the operating room.
